No one ever believes their dream vacation can instantly turn into a tragic nightmare...until it's too late.
Some tourists vanish without a trace. Over 170 people have disappeared from cruise ships around the world since 1995, several under very suspicious circumstances. Others have their lives senselessly stolen, like the 8-year old boy sucked into an unprotected pool drain at a major resort, leaving his mother crying out his name as security staff held her at gunpoint. Or 22-year old Nolan Webster, denied proper medical care after being pulled unconscious from a Cancun resort pool, only to have his dead body left in plain view for hours and his parents billed for his room.
Vacations are meant to be joyous and fun. Sometimes terrible things happen unexpectedly. A parasailing newlywed plummets hundreds of feet to her death on the last day of her honeymoon when her harness snaps in mid-air. Hikers make a fatal plunge on an improperly-marked Kauai cliffside trail. And of course, there's every mother's nightmare the disappearance of Natalee Holloway while on a high school graduation trip to Aruba with members of her senior class.
FATAL SUNSET, the latest exposé from award-winning and bestselling author Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff is not meant to do for vacations what "Jaws" did for beaches. "I'm not trying to scare you from going on a trip. I'm revealing these hidden true stories in order to make sure you understand what danger lurks in between the sun and sand and that perfect getaway," explains Nemcoff, the writer behind bestsellers "The Death of Osama Bin Laden" and "Where's My F*cking Latte?", an insiders look at the world of Hollywood celebrity assistants that was not only featured on Access Hollywood but has spent over four years straight at the top of 's top-selling chart in the categories of "Television" and "Movies."
"Sometimes travelers put themselves into situations beyond their limitations or worse, beyond their control," says Nemcoff. "People on vacation tend to engage in riskier activities than they are normally used to. Sometimes things can instantly turn deadly because you made a bad decision or were in the wrong place at the wrong time."
In addition to FATAL SUNSET's shocking stories of deadly shark attacks, drownings, suspicious encounters, unfortunate accidents and murder, there is one part of the book that still haunts Nemcoff. "I interviewed Nolan Webster's mom, Maureen. In the book she explains what it was like to get that terrible phone call about her son's death. It's something I think about every day."
"There's one piece of advice I've learned researching this book," tells Nemcoff. "Dare to be aware."

Ok, yes, this is a little on the morbid side. But I like morbid books, and love hiking and camping. Not all the stories fall in this bucket, but many do.The writing is average, but the subjects have been very well chosen and well described. If youre a True Crime reader, this will be up your alley as well. Although there's some crime involved, there are just as many accidents and such.
It's kind of a train wreck book- it's hard to look away and hard to put down. Easy reading for hard subject matter. I would definitely not recommend reading this before you go on vacation, but in the greater scheme of things it's not a bad idea to read this sort of "true life" collection just to help know what to guard against. Some of this stuff is so outrageously awful I had to keep reminding myself these things really happened to people.
I read this right after Death in Yellowstone- which may be why I'm being a little hard on the writing. That book is impeccably researched compared to this one. But it's still a darned good and worthwhile read.

Fatal Sunset Deadly Vacations Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff 9781934602164 Books Reviews
This book is kind of heartbreaking read. It tells the stories of people who met their ends while on vacation. The book serves both as a kind of somber form of entertainment, and can give you an idea of what you need to be aware of when you are on vacation. Overall, this was a great book that I am very glad I went through and read.
Whether you are soon going on vacation and are worried about any potential dangers you might face, or if you want it just for the entertainment value, this book is a fine choice.
h to be a travel magazine article. Hardly enough anecdotes to be considered a book. Read the whole "article" in 1 hour. I could've easily written this book myself in 2 hours after reading a few travel magazines!
More astonishing than the frequency and ease with which people disappear or die while on vacation is the corporate sinful greed which causes organizations, police and even countries to close ranks against surviving kin to keep the truth (even minor facts) hidden. Without someone traveling with the victim I doubt anyone would ever learn a single thing due to the cover ups and outright lies. From reading case histories presented in this book, I get the idea some employees of these sites or vessels of these "dream vacations" are in league with purely evil people. Imagine for money!
Fatal Sunset Deadly Vacations, succeeds as a book and as relevant literature because it is a cautionary tale. This book could easily have been just other conspiracy theorists crazy perspectives. There is just one huge problem, there are far too many facts that Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff provides for his audience. You know what all those facts reveal to the observant and inquisitive minds? It unveils sinister webs of deceit and patterns of treachery plotted against unsuspecting people that are seeking refuge and relaxation in foreign countries. What they find instead is tragedy.
I'm not asking you to take my word for anything in this review. Matters of fact don't. If you're planning on taking a vacation you need to be aware of the information that is contained in this book for your own safety. Just objectively analyze the information that is presented and you will discover a repeating pattern at these resorts.
The one thing I love about Mark's writing is that he provides facts and he doesn't spoon feed them to his audience as he presents the information. He assumes that his readers are erudite enough to critically analyze the information and decide for themselves. However the facts are self-evident in their conclusions.
A great look into the dark side of what happens to some people when they leave the comfort of their area and go on vacations into relatively unknown areas that sometimes turn deadly. The stories told in this book are absolutely compelling and eye-opening, there are a lot of dangers hidden behind the allure of a 'dream vacation' and the fact that these stories are true are downright scary. The book is written really well and the author does a good job of making the stories very captivating, I simply couldn't put the book down - the author is very talented and has definitely done a lot of research and put a lot of time into making this book a very compelling, eerie read.
Fatal Sunset is the definition of a 'page-turner' and is written in a way that is just as difficult to put down as it is shocking
Like many books telling tourists to watch their backs, this one gives good reasons to be careful when you're vacationing. The only thing that drew me back a bit was the references to Florida. Yes, its one of the prime destinations in the US for both foreign and domestic tourists. But as a well traveled native of this state, I found it a but unfair to single out Orlando and Miami as especially dangerous.
I've been all over these United States, both touring them and living in various places. And I can honestly attest to Florida being one of the wildest and most beautiful. I've lived in a great many large cities in this country and this state. Orlando is no more UNSAFE than any of the other cities I've been to. Like anywhere, there are always bad spots. But I find the people and places in and around Orlando to be helpful and fascinating, far more than dangerous or threatening.
It just takes some common sense and an awareness of one's surroundings, no matter how much fun you're having, to stay safe.
Back to the book; I especially found the bits about Hawaii to be interesting, because I've yet to venture there and realize fully that anywhere with such beauty, usually holds dangers as well. The Grand Canyon is a prime natural example. Take care of yourselves when traveling anywhere, and don't get so carried away that you inadvertently let your guard down. ;)
Ok, yes, this is a little on the morbid side. But I like morbid books, and love hiking and camping. Not all the stories fall in this bucket, but many do.
